Medical non-fiction books have been doing the rounds more than ever before these days and with National Doctor’s Day just having gone by, we bring to you another bestseller. Dr. Shiv Kumar Sarin’s Own Your Body, published by Bloomsbury India this year, is another book from the genre we recommend you add to your TBRs.
About the book:
Own Your Body bridges the gap between medical jargon and everyday life by using simple, uncomplicated language. Whether you’re facing a health scare or just striving for a healthier and happier lifestyle, Dr. Sarin’s wisdom shines through, empowering readers to take charge of their health.
The book with life-saving tips has been divided into clear and easy to follow sections, with topics that reflect the questions and doubts about health that everyone has at some point or the other:
- My Story, My Liver (I am twenty-one, slim, but have fatty liver. Why me?…)
2. My Story, My Body (I am fifty and diabetic with high serum lipids; the doctor says no alcohol…)
3. My Story, My Fears (I am fat due to thyroid; true or false?…)
4. My Child’s Story (My daughter is eighteen and has cysts in her ovary; can she marry and have children?…)
5. My Relative’s Story (My husband snores aloud; the matter is beyond the bedroom now…)
6. I Know I Have a Manufacturing Issue (Learning to handle it…)
7. Eternal Well-Being (Your path to health and longevity without pills…)
Throughout the book, we follow 21 different real-life examples that resonate with the experiences of countless individuals. These experiences are scattered throughout each section, offering practical remedies on challenges posed by fatty liver, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, cancers and many more ailments.
Main takeaways
Instead of offering generic, run-off-the-mill advice like “Eat your fruits!” or “Exercise daily!”, Dr. Sarin’s main aim is to make his readers aware that genetic inheritance has a big impact on one’s health. In his preface he states that our parents’ genes will matter a lot in the manufacturing of our bodily systems.
The book also aims to reach out to those who are disabled, to help them understand themselves better so that may approach the right doctors and live a healthy lifestyle.
He also aims to prepare his readers to have healthy offspring – their next generation. He urges his audience to read the narratives in the book, learn from the journeys of these patients, determine their prototype and plan accordingly for the birth of their offspring.
Through the various anecdotes, he also teaches us important facts and dispels myths about liver diseases and obesity. For instance, fatty liver is not directly correlational with obesity and can be found in people who are slim and considered ‘body fit’. In fact, 20% of those with fatty liver are not even obese.
Overall, Dr. Sarin has written this book with a vision to help readers make correct health-related decisions so that they may take responsibility for their health instead of being dependent on others, including their own family.
